Access
and Training Process
Users must complete general training on lab safety and procedures
to gain access to labs, as well as training on
specific equipment to become a certified user.
Access to the SMIF labs is by card entry using Duke ID cards.
Users from Industry should contact SMIF
to request access.

Lab Access, Equipment Training, and Certification
NEW USERS: The steps for gaining access to the
SMIF labs and equipment are as follows:

Download and review the SMIF Lab Safety and Procedures Manual

| 2. |
Complete a SMIF Access form and
return it to SMIF.
The completed form should include your signature indicating
that you have read the Safety and Procedures Manual, as well
as your advisor or manager's signature indicating authorization
to charge user fees. After receiving your form, SMIF will
send you a Web site login. |

Review the
Training Class Calendar for
available Lab Safety and Procedures training classes. Then
enroll in the following classes using your website login
- All users must complete the lab safety & procedures
class
- Cleanroom users must complete the cleanroom safety
class
- Chemical hood users must complete the wet hood and
chemical safety class

On completion of the appropriate classes, SMIF authorizes access and your Duke
card is enabled for lab entry. |

Schedule Equipment Training
for each piece of equipment you are interested in using. Choose
one of the following options:

On completion of equipment training,
contact SMIF to Request
Certification based on the Equipment
Training Checklist. |
| 7. |
Following Certification,
SMIF authorizes use of the equipment. |
Access to the SMIF labs is by card entry using Duke ID cards. Contact SMIF if you are an external user and are interested in obtaining a Contractors ID card to enable card entry access.
