Directions and Parking Instructions

SMIF is located in the Fitzpatrick Center of the CIEMAS building on Duke University’s West Campus.  The entrance to the facility is on the first floor of the west wing of this building.  Parking instructions and driving directions to SMIF are given below. An interactive map of the Duke University campus can be found at map.duke.edu.

Parking for SMIF
The most convenient visitor parking location for visiting SMIF is the Bryan Center Parking Garage (PGIV) located off Science Drive.  In the event that the Bryan Center Parking Garage is full, you can also park in the Duke Hospital South Clinic Parking Garage (PGI) off of Trent Drive (see above map).

Visitors that park in these areas have the choice of paying the hourly rate for parking at the parking garage, or you may pick up a daily parking coupon in the SMIF office.  The $5 charge for these coupons will be added to your user account.

Driving Directions and Walking Directions from Parking Lots
Note to visitors from UNC-Chapel Hill: Instead of driving to Duke University, you may want to consider taking the free Robertson Scholars Bus that operates on a regular schedule during the fall and spring semesters between the Morehead Planetarium on the UNC Campus and the Chapel Circle on the Duke Campus.  For a bus schedule and more information, visit https://aux03.auxserv.duke.edu/parking/BusSchedules/robertsonbus.htm

From RDU Airport, Raleigh and Points East

• Via I-40 West: Exit onto the Durham Freeway (N.C. 147).
• Take Durham Freeway to Fulton Street exit (#15B).
• Turn left onto Fulton Street, take to end at Erwin Road.
• For the Bryan Center parking deck:
• Turn right onto Erwin Road.
• At the 3rd traffic light take a left onto Towerview
• Take a left at the 2nd road onto Science Drive
• Parking garage (PGIV) entrance is at the last right before the traffic circle
• For the Duke Hospital South Clinic parking deck:
• Turn left on Erwin Road
• Turn Right on Trent Drive
• The garage (PGI – Clinic Parking) will be on your left

From Greensboro and Points West

• Via 1-85 North: Exit onto N.C. 147 (Durham Freeway).
• Take first exit off Durham Freeway onto 15-501 S. toward Chapel Hill
• Stay in right lane, and take second exit (#107) to N.C. 751.
• Turn LEFT onto N.C. 751 S., go under the highway, and take next left turn onto Erwin Road.
• For the Bryan Center parking deck:
• Take a right at the next traffic light onto Towerview
• Take a left at the 2nd road onto Science Drive
• Parking garage (PGIV) entrance is at the last right before the traffic circle
• For the Duke Hospital South Clinic parking deck:
• Follow Erwin Road through multiple stoplights and past the Main Duke Hospital on your right and the VA hospital on your left
• After passing Duke Hospital on your right turn Right on Trent Drive
• The garage (PGI – Clinic Parking) will be on your left

From Richmond and Points North

• Via I-85 South: In Durham, take the left-lane exit (#174B) for US 15-501 S. Bypass - Duke University/Chapel Hill.
• Continue on U.S. 15-501 to the fourth exit (#107) a right-lane exit for N.C. 751.
• Turn LEFT onto N.C. 751 S., go under the highway, and take next left turn onto Erwin Road.
• For the Bryan Center parking deck:
• Take a right at the next traffic light onto Towerview
• Take a left at the 2nd road onto Science Drive
• Parking garage (PGIV) entrance is at the last right before the traffic circle
• For the Duke Hospital South Clinic parking deck:
• Follow Erwin Road through multiple stoplights and past the Main Duke Hospital on your right and the VA hospital on your left
• After passing Duke Hospital on your right turn Right on Trent Drive
• The garage (PGI – Clinic Parking) will be on your left

From Chapel Hill

• Via U.S. 15-501: North. Take 15-501 N. marked Duke Univ. /Med Ctr. Do not take 15-501 Business.
• Take N.C. 751 exit (#107) marked Duke. Univ. West Campus.
• Turn right onto N.C. 751, make the next left turn onto Erwin Road.
• For the Bryan Center parking deck:
• Take a right at the next traffic light onto Towerview
• Take a left at the 2nd road onto Science Drive
• Parking garage (PGIV) entrance is at the last right before the traffic circle
• For the Duke Hospital South Clinic parking deck:
• Follow Erwin Road through multiple stoplights and past the Main Duke Hospital on your right and the VA hospital on your left
• After passing Duke Hospital on your right turn Right on Trent Drive
• The garage (PGI – Clinic Parking) will be on your left

Directions to SMiF labs from the Bryan Center Parking Garage

• Walk down Science Drive past the traffic circle at the end
• Continue down the sidewalk past the Fitzpatrick (CIEMAS) sign on your right
• Enter Fitzpatrick at the first door on your right past the sign
• Once inside the building enter SMiF labs via the first door on your right

Directions to SMiF labs from the Duke Hospital South Clinic Parking Garage

• Walk out of the parking garage crossing Trent Drive towards the helicopter pads at the hospital crossing the train tracks
• Take a left down the walkway with handrails in front of William Brown Bell Building just after the train tracks. 
• Walk past the blue Searle Center sign and down stairs
• Walk under the hospital tram and continue straight down the sidewalk until reaching the traffic circle in front of the Searle Center. 
• Follow the road to the left around the next building past the coal plant on the left
• Go towards Research Drive and cross the street at the Coal Pile Drive sign
• Walk towards the Fitzpatrick (CIEMAS) building on your left
• Walk past the café towards the Fitzpatrick sign
• Enter the building via the last door on your left before your reach the sign
• Once inside the building enter SMiF labs via the first door on your right
